Report: Fedor Emelianenko vs Antonio Silva possible for Strikeforce event on Jan. 29

He’s back. Fedor Emelianenko will make his long-awaited return to the cage when he takes on Antonio Silva on the upcoming Strikeforce card set for Jan. 29, according to MMA Weekly . If the report is true, it will mark the first time “The Last Emperor” will be in action since Fabricio Werdum tapped him in the first round with a triangle back in June. There’s been confusion regarding the status of the Russian Sambo specialist, mainly due to issues with a long re-negotiation of his contract between his management, M-1 Global and Strikeforce. It looks like they’ve finally come to an agreement and it does not involve a rematch with Werdum or an oft-asked for fight with Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem. Antonio Silva was last seen surviving a first round scare to come back and pound out Mike Kyle at Strikeforce: “Henderson vs Babalu” on Dec. 4. He boasts an outstanding record of 15-2, with his last loss coming at the hands of the same man to famously end Fedor’s run as the best in the world.? Is this good matchmaking? Are you happy with “Bigfoot” getting the next shot against Fedor? The Jan. 29 card is still a rumor at this point and Strikeforce has yet to announce the event. CEO Scott Coker has stated Herschel Walker will also make his return on the card but did not give any indication if his opponent will remain Scott Carson. Also rumored to appear is Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz along with his arch nemesis Jason “Mayhem” Miller

WEC 53 bonuses and awards for ‘Henderson vs Pettis’ on Versus

WEC 53 : “Henderson vs Pettis” from the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona is officially in the books, which means that a couple of fighters who busted their asses in the cage are getting rewarded for their efforts. The promotion is cutting checks for $10,000 to each fight bonus recipient — the same as usual for the promotion that closed its doors with a bang. In addition to their base salaries, the WEC awarded lightweight brawlers Anthony Pettis and Ben Henderson “Fight of the Night” for their thrilling back-and-forth war of attrition that “Showtime” took via unanimous decision to win the 155-pound title. You didn’t think that Neo-like head kick was going to go unrewarded, did you? Eddie Wineland earned himself “Knockout of the Night” by channeling his inner “Rampage” and slamming Ken Stone so hard he was reportedly out for five to 10 minutes before being carried out on a stretcher. Finally, Shane Roller took home his “Submission of the Night” bonus by quieting resident lightweight loudmouth Jamie Varner with a rear naked choke in the very first round. Here are the special fight bonuses for WEC 53: Fight of the Night — Anthony Pettis vs Ben Henderson Knockout of the Night — Eddie Wineland? Submission of the Night — Shane Roller Again, each fighter received $10,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as they’re made available. Pettis Dethrones Henderson in Final WEC Event

Glendale, Ariz. – UFC, are you ready for “Showtime?” Because he’s coming soon. On a night wrapped in historical overtones, Anthony “Showtime” Pettis dethroned WEC lightweight champion Benson Henderson at Jobing.com Arena to earn a UFC title shot. Both fighters waged a back-and-forth battle that was worthy of Fight of the Night and may have been decided in the final 80 seconds of the fifth round. With the fight apparently up for grabs, Pettis went airborne, acrobatically bounced off the cage fence and executed a beautiful high kick that landed flush on the hometown champ’s jaw and dropped him to the canvas. It was an electrifying and unprecedented move that no one in press row had ever seen, like something out of a “The Matrix” movie. It sent the live crowd at the arena into mass hysteria. Henderson gamely weathered the crucial assault and got back to his feet, but that sequence may have anchored his defeat by unanimous decision. The riveting match was fittingly the last bout ever for the decade-old WEC, which is set to merge with its sister organization, the UFC. That means Pettis, a Milwaukee native who starred in an MTV episode of “World of Jenks,” is slated to fight the winner of the Jan. 1 bout between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and unbeaten challenger Gray Maynard. An emotional Pettis, whose father was murdered during an armed robbery in 2003, credited his coach Duke Roufus for the one-of-a-kind kick that made a lot of people’s jaw drop. “We practice that all the time,” Pettis said, “and I’ve got 10 more kicks like that coming when I get to the UFC.” Roufus called the kick an “Ong Bak” kick, noting it is an old Muay Thai technique. Pettis dropped Henderson on another occasion with a stiff right hand, but barely survived a rear naked choke in the fourth round that was close to being dead on. Pettis was not the only man to make history Thursday night. Dominick Cruz did, too. Cruz’s handsome reward for a night’s work: Two world titles and a slice of history. The super-quick Californian used his ‘catch-me-if-you-can’ striking style to beat up No.1 challenger Scott Jorgensen for five rounds to become the UFC’s first-ever bantamweight champion.

WEC 53 recap: Pettis wins belt in classic, Cruz dominates, Horodecki gets choked

This FanPost was rewritten and front-paged by James Iannotti of MMAmania.com. World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) is no more. The farewell event for the promotion before merging with the UFC went down earlier tonight from the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona. WEC 53: “Henderson vs. Pettis” featured a blockbuster fight card with two world title bouts and an assortment of other high profile match-ups. Here’s how it all went down: WEC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson headlined the event, putting his gold on the line for the final time against 23-year-old number one contender Anthony Pettis . The WEC brass couldn’t have asked for a better show out of the two men. They closed the WEC doors in style, complete with a wall walking head kick from Pettis late in the fifth round to secure the upset victroy. It was a back and forth five round war for the ages with both fighters leaving everything they had in the cage. Pettis didn’t finish the fight with the late highlight reel kick, but that’s what everybody is going to be talking about tomorrow. It was something you’d expect to see in a Bruce Lee movie. He had Henderson backpedaling. He ran off the cage and connected with a flying kick right on the chin. Henderson crumbled to the floor, but he somehow managed to recover and make it to the final bell. The fight was very close, but Pettis deserved to win

WEC 53 results: Anthony Pettis decisions Ben Henderson to win WEC lightweight title

The very last fight to ever take place under the World Extreme Cagefighting banner was nothing less than spectacular. For five whole rounds, Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis went to war for the WEC lightweight title and to determine the number one contender for the UFC lightweight championship. It truly was “Showtime,” folks. Anthony Pettis took a decision victory to become the WEC lightweight champion in a thrilling fight for the world’s most exciting organization. It was a “razor close fight” as color commentator Stephan Bonnar referred to it. In the fifth and final frame, Pettis landed the most exciting head kick in the history of MMA. In fact, this may have truly been the “Fight of the Year.” Ben Henderson was unhappy with the decision being awarded to his opponent but there was little doubt “Showtime” won the fight after the final round. Throughout the fight, “Bendo” was landing takedowns but it seemed as if each time he did, Pettis would reverse him and take his back. He never could get the submission but it scored him enough points to give him two of the first four rounds. Not to be outdone, Henderson nearly choked out the MTV reality star with a rear naked choke in the third. Pettis, determined and unwilling to break, managed to get out once again and head to a fifth and deciding round. The fourth round may have saw the most action but what happened in the fifth will never be forgotten.? Towards the end of the round, in what was still close enough to get nervous about for either fighter, Pettis charged forward with Henderson backing away. Instead of going straight at him, he used the cage to push off and landed the most amazing head kick in the history of the WEC. “Bendo” immediately dropped and looked like he was out

WEC 53: End of an Era

Q: The WEC blossomed into MMA’s second biggest promotion, home to the best lighter weight fighters in the world. At what point in the organization’s existence did that become true? Reed Harris: We had all weight classes. Our approach for our events was, ‘What’s the best way to draw fans to the event?’ Whether they were light or heavy didn’t matter. We tried to find local guys, known fighters, that would enhance the cards. Dana was the one that (the lighter weight classes exclusively) forced that on me, I didn’t want to do it. He told me he wanted to get rid of light heavyweight, middleweight and welterweight. I didn’t want to do it because I had Carlos Condit, Brian Stann and Chael Sonnen and all of these guys. I did not want to do it but Dana was like, ‘You’ve got to do this to break out from under our shadow, otherwise you guys are never going to make it.’ So we did it and it ended up working great. It was a great call. Q: Is it safe to say the WEC was merely a regional promotion until Zuffa acquired you guys in December 2006? Harris: Yeah, we were regional for sure. But we were on HDNet, so we had coverage nationwide. We did all of our shows in California and only did one show back east but it didn’t do well so we never went back. We were careful. Scott and I didn’t have rose-colored glasses. We were doing well in Lemoore, California and we had a great thing going. The problem is that a lot of these other companies try to be UFC and we didn’t want to be that. Q: Worst fight in WEC history. Harris: Paulo Filho/Chael Sonnen (their second fight). It wasn’t Chael’s fault; Paulo didn’t want to fight and didn’t seem to care about making weight. I told Chael later, ‘That fight sucked.’ Chael said, ‘It’s really hard to fight against a guy who doesn’t want to fight.’ There was also a Shannon Ritch fight. He came out and got submitted in like a minute, and then walked off the ramp and asked if he could get paid (laughs heartily). Q: Reed, you’ve got the last WEC show coming up tonight. What are you going to miss most of all those experiences, all of the things you looked forward to whenever you hosted a WEC show? Harris: I think the overall satisfaction I gained having my friends and family calling me and saying, ‘Wow, what a great show.’ I’ll miss talking with the fighters before the fights, you know, I would always give them a talk about what I expected from them. I don’t think I’ll miss the relationships and stuff because I think I’ll still have ‘em. Q: Tell me how much the WEC’s success has exceeded your earliest expectations? Harris: When I first got in we were looking at throwing one show. It was more like throwing a party than a fight show. It reminded me of a party. And then the next thing I know I’m standing up on stage, looking out at this huge crowd, and a guy walks up to me and says, ‘OK, let’s talk about number two.’ At that point it turned into a business. Q: I hate talking about the message without talking about the messenger. For people who don’t know you, talk about your life before becoming a fight promoter. Harris: I started as an appliance salesman and was working at the store and a guy from a real estate company came into the store. I sold him a VCR and he said, ‘Wow, you’re a good salesman. Go get your real estate license and you can come work for me.’ And I rode that into becoming vice president of a large company. It was all hard work. There were a couple years where I worked every day; I didn’t take any days off. I actually started training taekwondo back in high school in Chicago but only trained for like a year and a half and then went to college. I took some Karate at the University of Iowa, my first year of college, and right when I started Christmas of my first year my dad was killed in a car accident. So I left school and went home to deal with that. It was real hard. Q: How old was your father when he passed? Harris: He was 43. My dad was a very ingenious guy. He was one of the first people to manufacture milk bottles in plastic. Milk had always been in cartons but my dad and this other guy had this idea to put it in plastic, gallon bottles. He invented the plastic milk bottle.
